The maori people of New Zealand hold tattooing as a sacred art. It came from the islands of East Polynesia. Maori have traditionally worn the tattoo on their face which was to show everyone who they were i.e. their family, tribe and status within an area grouping. Tattoo designs were traditionally inked on the face and depicted the wearers heritage and standing within a tribal community.

There are many designs that can be personalized to incorporate other styles for example combining maori and Celtic designs. Mixed race people like to represent their heritage from both side and this can be achieved really effectively with a combination of two styles.

There is a fairly new term given to skin art in New Zealand called Kirituhi (writing on skin). Kirituhi should not be mistaken for or confused with “Ta Moko” the traditional and sacred form of maori Tattoo.
